Review: Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)

Ralph_Breaks_the_Internet_(2018_film_poster)The first Wreck-It Ralph was a hella good time. I had a blast. I cried in the right places, I laughed at the right bits. I thought that movie ended perfectly. So I was a little doubtful about the need for a sequel, but then I saw the trailers and it had me laughing. So I changed my mind and I said yeah, I am up for this.

The Bad News:

The thing with trailers is that it has to be well calibrated. Choosing which scenes to show that won’t give too much away, while still pulling you in. But with Wreck-It Ralph 2, I feel like their ace was the Disney Princesses sequence, but then they had it up on the trailers and I had been seeing it for ages. I mean I was still very happy about it, came show time, but being a Disney kid, I feel like I would’ve been beside myself had I seen that on the big screen for the first time. The Pancake Milkshake game sequence which was shown in one of the trailers, apparently did not make it in the movie (too macabre perhaps?). But they did put it up as one of the two post credits sequences, and they made a little meta skit out of it.  It’s a solid scene that would get a laugh out of anyone, but like I said, I had already seen it in the trailer a million times.

Wreck-It Ralph 2 has a lot of those great joke skits and bits, but they seem to work better as just those, skits, something that you can put up on YouTube, but it doesn’t do anything to make the movie a unified whole. I feel like there are a million things going on here and my brain is scrambling to make them all coalesce somehow.

I was also aware of how there are dull pockets here and there. A few broad humor and clichéd scenes where I notice myself checking the time.

The Good News:

Like I said, I love the Disney Princesses sequence too much. It is cute and charming and self-deprecating. I am a fan as well of how they reimagined the Internet. The auto-complete guy was hilarious, and so were the pop-up ad guys. I love the way they made the world of the internet into this Tokyo on acid kind of place, and I love that they also showed the other end of the line, which is us, the users (portrayed as very cute, little Minecraft humans when inside the internet), and how we react to lost internet connections, to finding a really good shopping bargain online, to the glee of watching goat videos.

I also love the fact that there are no catty ladies here. I know how there are quite a handful of TV and movies where women are pitted against each other. And because of that, I was kind half-expecting Shank, the main character of this apocalyptic drag race game, to be the villain to Vanellope. But she turned out to be the opposite. I was also half expecting Yes (a name), the um, one who’s in charge of ze internet, to be the villain, but no. Because here, female support female! And there are actually no villain in this movie! Except maybe internet viruses, and clingyness! So hooray for that!

I also love the concept of Ralph and Vanellope getting deep into their friendship, experiencing the joys, and the trials and tribulations of paldom. I love the message that you can still be friends despite having different dreams. I love the fact that Ralph is the clingy one and not Venellope (because ya know, the stereotype of girl = clingy). While this film doesn’t reach the emotional pull or even the inventiveness of say, Pixar offerings like Inside Out, or Up, or Wall-E, to name a few. But I appreciate the movie for its earnestness. It won’t leave a strong enough impression one me, but I do know that it brings some good ol’ warm and fuzzy fun.

 Watch this if:

  1. You like ze internet.
  2. You are a Disney…freak? Disney head? Mouskeeteer? Oh you know, who you are.
  3. You love a good friendship movie.
  4. You love goats.

Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

  1. Ahh I’m glad to hear the sequel is good! I’m seeing it next week and I can’t wait. Gutted that pancake scene didn’t make it into the main movie though!
    P.S. Who doesn’t love goat videos? 😀
